Built-up Roofing (BUR) Systems

Professionally installed, cost-effective commercial roofing systems.

Built-up Roofing (BUR) Systems

Built-up roofing (BUR) systems have been used in the United States for more than 100 years. Often referred to as “tar and gravel” roofs, these roofing systems are generally composed of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics and finished with a top layer of aggregate, such as stone or gravel.

  • High-quality, durable roofing system - Built-up roofing systems are a great option for commercial buildings with a completely flat roof. As opposed to single layer roofing systems, the multiple layers of a BUR roof provides superior protection making it less susceptible to punctures from falling debris, animal activity, foot traffic and more. A BUR roofing system has a life expectancy of 20+ years.
  • Fire and wind-resistant - Built-up roofing systems have a Class A fire rating which is the most stringent rating available for exterior fire resistance. The multiple layers of a built-up roof are adhered to each other without fasteners which reduces the number of penetration and stress points increasing wind resistance.
  • Low maintenance and cost effective - Built-up roofs require very little maintenance. An annual inspection is recommended to ensure proper drainage and identify any other potential issues. Repairs can easily be made with time proven methods thus extending the roof's lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.
  • Waterproofing and ultra-violet protection - Built-up roofing systems consist of multiple layers of bitumen and saturated felts. These create a water-resistant barrier that ensures protection against the elements for years. Applying a top layer of gravel embedded bitumen or a granular surfaced cap sheet to a BUR roof will protect it from UV damage.
  • Energy efficient - The multiple layers of a built-up roof provide superior resistance to heat conduction between the interior and exterior of a building. This can result in significantly reduced energy costs.
