The garage area was leaking badly and we needed to replace all the old plywood. We also replaced all the flashing to seal any leaks and replaced Pat’s old asphalt shingles with new Owens Corning Duration Series Shingles.

Premier Donates Roof to Family in Need

Premier Donates Roof to Family in Need

We were so excited to be able to help a family in need this Holiday Season. The Manning family win Beachwood, NJ had an old leaky roof and did not have the funds to replace it. Mother and wife Linda Manning is employed as a respiratory therapist but was limited to working three days a week following surgery to remove cancer from her kidney. This put a huge dent in the family finances and their ability to make needed repairs. We were able to install a completely new roof, just 2 days before Christmas. The Manning family is now safe, warm and dry in their home.

“This Christmas Premier Roofing restored my belief in humanity. Typically contractors do not bring welcomed news but a knock on the door, two days before Christmas, came with the amazing news that Premier Roofing had chosen our family to help as this is something they do, the caring company that they are, to help a family during the Christmas season.”

Homeowner’s New Roof in Seaside Heights

Homeowner's New Roof in Seaside Heights

Premier recently added a new roof in Seaside Heights, NJ for Janet Bell. We replaced original contractor grade shingles as the previous contractor put on poor shingles and had leaks throughout roof. This home in seaside heights is three stories tall and the roof is very steep. This presented some challenges as the home was also VERY close to neighboring properties (as most homes are in Beach Communities).

“After Premier evaluated my roof and explained the importance of tearing off old roof, I immediately felt comfortable with Premier and cancelled my other estimates ”

New 50 Year Roof in Toms River, NJ

New 50 Year Roof in Toms River, NJ

Premier Roofing recently installed a new 50 year roof in Toms River, NJ for John Goodman (not the actor) at 2229 Audubon Drive. The new roof is a “50 year roof” because the shingles are warantied for 50 years. The existing roof was covered with old Tamko dimensional shingles. Tamko is a decent product but their warranty is inferior to Owens Corning and as we know, all things degrade over time. We were able to enhance the look of this home using TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles. These Owens Corning shingles are specially formulated to provide greater contrast and dimension to any roof. Through the use of multiple granule colors and shadowing, TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles offer a truly unique and dramatic effect. The exclusive combination of color and depth is what makes TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles like no other.

When is it Time to Start Replacing Shingles?

When is it Time to Start Replacing Shingles?

Have you noticed that some shingles are missing from your roof? If so, you need to jump on the issue immediately. Shingles work together as a system and when a few start falling off, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a bigger issue. They might fall off for a variety of reasons, each with their own solution. By learning a bit about the causes of shingle damage and when it’s time to start replacing shingles, you can save yourself a whole lot of trouble down the line.

Strong Winds

Strong winds are a common cause of shingles blowing off the roof. While properly installed shingles are quite durable, don’t underestimate mother nature. When a powerful wind blows underneath a shingle, it can dislodge it from the roof and send it flying. The stronger the wind is, the more often you will be replacing shingles. As far as prevention goes, there isn’t much you can do other than check your roof regularly and make sure to have a professional come in for roof repairs as soon as possible. If you live in a particularly windy or stormy area, you may want to consider different roofing options to see if there is something more durable for your situation.

Deterioration

As a homeowner, you likely know all about home deterioration and the importance of staying on top of the issues that result from it. Shingles are no exception. The average asphalt roof has a lifespan of around 15 years so if you are getting close to that, it’s essential that you have your roof inspected by a professional.

If you notice that the shingles are worn down, it’s a good sign you need to start thinking about replacing shingles. Another sign is when you notice shingles are curling or cracking. When your shingles have begun to deteriorate, the heat can cause them to curl and crack – not only are these signs that you need a new roof but you need it quickly. Any ‘chink in the armor’ of your roof could lead to moisture penetrating your roof deck and eventually causing structural issues.

Problems With Installation

The previously mentioned issues are fairly cut and dry. Is your roof old? Get it replaced. Did strong winds blow off some shingles? Get them repaired. However, it can be confusing when your relatively new roof starts experiencing issues with seemingly no cause. If this is the case, it’s possible that the roof was improperly installed. Each type of roofing product used has specific instructions from the manufacturer and best practices for achieving the best results. If an inexperienced roofer failed to follow these instructions, you are likely to have issues with your roof even though it isn’t that old.

It’s a good idea to contact the original roofer first to see if their services include replacing shingles for free, being that they are the cause of the issue. If you cannot get a hold of them, it’s best to consider a different roofer. A skilled roofer will quickly diagnose the issue and give you an estimate on the cost to fix it. Look at Google reviews, referrals from people you know, and ask as many questions as you can to find a roofer you can feel confident in.

Roof Repair – The Importance of Maintaining Roof Flashing

Roof Repair - The Importance of Maintaining Roof Flashing

Roof repair doesn’t only ensure continued protection from the elements for you and your family. It also maintains the overall protection of your house itself. An annual roof inspection is always a good idea for homeowners. If it is determined your roof is in need of maintenance, do not hesitate to contact a professional. A professional should be doing the inspection and, if they determine repair is needed, you should have it taken care of quickly.

Flashing is integral to the health of your roof. Roof flashing is the thin sheet of metal between your roof and other parts of your home, such as a chimney or exhaust vents. Other than creating that connection, flashing also provides a barrier between seamed areas. This barrier helps prevent damage to either side of the connected parts of your home.

Over time, roof flashing becomes naturally worn with age. Tree branches, heat and other natural hazards can also cause damage to your roof’s flashing. If your flashing is failing, you should schedule roof repair as quickly as possible to correct the issue. Maintaining your roof is crucial to your home’s overall health, and a roof repair may be in order if your flashing systems are failing.

Water Infiltration

Chimneys and dormer windows, while useful and aesthetically pleasing, are also tricky to maintain. These common construction elements create a need for protection from water infiltration. Flashing is an absolute necessity around these fixtures, as it keeps moisture and water from actively leaking into your home.

Flashing also plays an important part in channeling water away. Many roofs have multiple planes, and the valleys between these planes are essentially one big seam. Roof flashing is important here, as it not only covers this seam, but also directs water toward gutters and, ultimately, off of your roof.

Roof flashing maintenance is vital, as it lessens your home’s chances of suffering from water infiltration. This roof repair is well worth it, and it protects you from more costly or frequent repairs in the long-run.

Structural Damage

Water and many other natural phenomena can lead to serious issues with your home. Often, these issues aren’t readily apparent. Structural damage can start small and become exponentially worse over time. Roof repair becomes more difficult and costly once this kind of damage gains a foothold in your home.

This is another reason maintaining your roof’s flashing is so important. Flashing protects against long-term structural damage like rot and moisture-induced mold growth. It also helps in regulating the ambient heat from fireplaces, keeping it from aiding in the growth of mold. This heat can also cause damage to the wooden systems in your home. While roofing materials are obviously manufactured to help prevent this kind of damage, flashing is a special material with a specific purpose: to prevent your house from becoming structurally unsound from natural or preventable causes.

How to Hire The Right Roofing Contractor For The Job

How to Hire The Right Roofing Contractor For The Job

One of the most basic human needs is having a roof over your head. While that is just a saying, the importance of high-quality roofing on your home should not be understated. If you are building a new home or need your roof repaired, you need to find the right person for the job. There are so many options out there and you need to vet each roofing contractor properly.

Recommendations and Reviews

There really is no better way to gather information about a roofing contractor than through reviews and recommendations. When someone has had personal experience with a company, they can provide insights on everything from the quality of work to how friendly they are. Fortunately, in the internet age, there is no shortage of review platforms and reviews to read. Check out sites like Angie’s List, Yelp and Google My Business.

It’s important to read at least a few positive reviews, neutral reviews as well as very negative reviews. Sometimes negative reviews can tell the most about a company. If the negative reviews seem petty the company is probably decent. These can also tip you off about shady business practices and worst case scenarios.

Word-of-mouth reviews are also very reliable. When someone you know and trust recommends a roofing contractor, it can give you a pretty accurate read on the roofing contractor.

Speak To The Roofing Contractor

Even if you get a review from a trusted friend or family member, checking out the contractor for yourself is essential. There are a few important questions to cover when you speak to them. Find out their full company name and address so that you can confirm they have all of the required roofing permits and credentials. Next, ask them for references and a portfolio of their past work so you can see what they have to offer. Inquire about their experience in similar roofing projects and what their projected timeline would be for your project. It’s also a good idea to see if they offer any warranties which would cover any issues that may arise in the future.

Meet In Person

Once you’ve checked out the reviews and interviewed a few companies, it’s time to meet your first pick in person. They should provide you with a written estimate of all costs involved in the job. If they pressure you to sign a contractor without having time to look it over, they may be a trustworthy company. By talking in person, you should be able to get a sense of the people who make up the company

Signing the Contract

Once you’ve done all of your due diligence, it’s time to sign a contract. A roofing contract should include a payment schedule, a detailed scope of work, and the projected timeline. Be sure to thoroughly read the contract before you sign it and don’t be afraid to seek a second opinion first if you are not completely satisfied with its terms. Once the contract is signed, it’s time for a new roof!
